This paper studies the Entertainment Life of Imperial Concubines in Qing Court drawn by Chen Mei, who was a court painter in reign of Emperor Yongzheng Qianlong and Qianlong to discuss the development of ladies painting with fine brushwork in the flourishing age of the last dynasty in Chinese feudal society and the palace culture reflected by the paintings. The author firstly traces to the source of the paintings according to the documentary records including the Guocha Huazhi written by Feng Jinbo and restores thecharacteristics of inheriting Song and Yuan Dynasty and western methods and fine strokes of Chen Mei in techniques of ladies in painting with fine brushwork. On this basis, centered on the two words, “Qing” and “entertainment” and in combination with the thoughts, policies and aesthetic appreciation of rules in the early Qing Dynasty, the paper provides an analysis of the scene atmosphere with dynamic and static combination and reflection of the dynamic in the static and characteristics presented by techniques in pen and ink and stroke, character shape, background color, enclosure composition in Entertainment Life of Imperial Concubines in Qing Court drawn by Chen Mei. Finally, the author analyzes the life and entertainment in the royal palace during the region of Emperor Yongzheng and Qianlong and the relationships among art, culture and politics reflected in the paintings, minority rulers and Han nationality culture and the emperor and the empresses and imperial concubines. Meanwhile, the author puts forward and discusses the mystery of “Han Chinese Clothing” hidden in the Entertainment Life of in Qing Court.Chen Mei and his work Entertainment Life of Imperial Concubines in Qing Court occupy a significant artistic status in the history of Chinese beauty paintings. The author hopes to provide some essential basic studies for continuous improvement of the history of Chinese beauty paintings by the discussion of Chen Mei’s Entertainment Life of Imperial Concubines in Qing Court in this paper.
