In 1921,Qiu Shiming was admitted to Beiping Art College, then he majored in painting with the guidance of many famous painters such as Cai Yuanpei, Yao Mangfu, Chen Shiceng, Wang Mengbai, Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian and so on. In 1924, after graduating from Beiping Art College, Qiu Shiming founded Jinghua Art College with Gao Xishun under the encouragement and help of Yao Mangfu. In that chaotic era, Qiu Shiming lived alone with little income. However, inspired by his enthusiasm on art education, at the same time, with the heart of carrying forward the traditional culture and protecting the traditional history, Qiu Shiming endured hardships,ran around, masterminded with painstaking effort and maintained Jinghua Art College independently for more than twenty years.In 1952, for political reasons, Qiu Shiming was transferred to art college of North West Military and Political University. In 1958, he was transferred to the art department of Inner Mongolia normal university, where he stayed until his death in 1970. During his teaching career in the two universities, Qiu Shiming cultivated many outstanding intellectuals for the motherland. Besides, his painting skills reached the peak of art during this period of time.This paper mainly divided into five chapters, the first chapter is the introduction. Comprehensive introduction to the topic is presented. The second chapter is the introduction of Qiu Shiming. The main life experience of Qiu on art teaching is described detailedly. From his process of study and research, we aim at finding out his research on traditional artistic achievement and on painting characteristics and on the teacher-student relationship. The third chapter is the summary of Qiu’ s art education. We focus on working out the ideology formed in Qiu’ s art education career, the unique insights toward traditional Chinese painting, and inspiration to current art education from his art education achievement. The fourth chapter is the controversy of art in twentieth century. We mainly explore the debate in modern art reform from Qiu. His representative of historical or nationalist part, adhering to the historical tradition, inheriting and carrying forward the fine traditional home,cause several fierce debate on art reform. The fifth chapter investigates the painting achievement of Qiu Shiming. This part starts from the works and paintings of traditional Chinese painting. On one hand, we want to demonstrate the special understanding and rich cultural heritage of Qiu on traditional Chinese painting. On the other hand, by the appreciation of paintings, we aim at verifying Qiu is not only skilled in painting theory but also good at ink painting skills. From the appreciation, we can find out the special painting characteristics and style of Qiu.This paper aims to use Qiu’ s education career as the clue, adheringhis painting ideology in education practice, and exploring traditional painting with persistent spirit. Qiu is a painting master on flower and bird in recent years. The flower and bird in his paintings have a unique artistic style.Innovations can be found from his using on color, paper, and ink. All above,Qiu’ s painting and writing are worth of learning.
