Fu Baoshi plays a special role in modern history of Chinese painting. On the one hand, he has inherited the basic value of traditional painting of the literati painting, and further developed it as the national features of Chinese painting. On the other hand, he is capable of absorbing the nutrients of the foreign culture. The new Japanese painting style has a profound influence on Fu Baoshi's painting. Therefore, two aspects have been embodied throughout the developing of his painting ideology: following the tradition and making an innovation. These aspects reflect Fu Baoshi's active conforming to the era and thinking of Contingency of embracing of the Chinese and Western. They also truly reflect his contradictory as well as realistic mentality when challenged by the artistic value and social functional requirement.This thesis discusses the internal features and outside factors underlying Fu Baoshi's painting ideology. And based on these two parts, it tries to thoroughly explore and analyze the latent relevance between them as well as the origin of his ideology. Besides that, this thesis makes a comparison of painters of the same period in order to obtain relatively objective evaluation and conclusion.
