As an important text to show its splendid success, Annual Report on Graduate Education of Shanghai Normal University(Shnu)(hereafter simply referred to as the Report) is worth translating and its English version needs to see the light as soon as possible. The translation of the Report is guided by the theory of functional equivalence and of varied adaptation. Meanwhile, relevant parallel texts are referred to in the process of its translation. The report shows clearly that words, expressions and involved sentences that have distinctive Chinese features are rendered by means of such flexible techniques as addition, omission, compilation and modification. In addition, the thesis illustrates how the difficult and essential parts are handled by analyzing both original and parallel texts in terms of wording, sentence organization and paragraph arrangement. As the Report serves practical purposes, the domesticating strategy is adopted as the major method for the sake of the target language readers. This thesis is intended to enlighten translators of reports as expositive texts and to help enhance their translation quality. |
