With translation becoming increasingly more important in today's globalized world,it's necessary to have authoritative English writings specialized in translation guidance been translated to Chinese.Written by Eugene A.Nida,a noted American linguist, translator, this academic monograph is aiming at delivering linguistic and translating information for its readers. The material of the translation report comes from the preface part and first four chapters of the book.In original text, there are many linguistic terms and cultural phrases;passive sentences and long sentences with complex structures can be seen widely;the style is concise and formal.Based on these textual characteristics, the translator selects functional equivalence as the guiding theory. The research objective is to translate the source text correctly and smoothly under the guidance of this theory, and deepen the translator's knowledge of functional equivalence. When writing the translation paper, literary review is used to study Nida's functional equivalence;case study is used to show the practical application of the theory, thus to prove that functional equivalence could guide the translation of such text. This translation report will help us better understand Nida and his knowledge, besides,it can provide a reference for the translation of academic monograph.
