This is a translation project report on An Essay on Crimes and Punishments byCesare Becarria, of which Chapter36to Chapter47with a commentary by VoltaireChapter1to Chapter12, a new edition corrected. An Essay on Crimes andPunishments is an extremely influential Enlightenment treatise on legal reform inwhich Beccaria advocates the ending of torture and the death penalty. The book alsocontains a lengthy commentary by Voltaire which is an indication of highly Frenchenlightened thinkers regarded the work. The main contents of this report are dividedinto four parts: Part One is the translation project description, including projectbackground, objectives and significance. Part Two is the background of the sourcetext, including the author introduction, main contents of the source text, linguisticfeatures of the source text, and evaluation and review of the source text, as well astheoretical foundation. Part Three is about translation difficulties and methods. Thedifficulties lie in the translation of specialized terminology and proper nouns such asplace names, organization names, accurate understanding of the linguistic features,sentence segmentation and the translation of other foreign languages (apart from theEnglish language). The methods include: amplification and annotation, reversedtranslation, domestification and foreignization, etc. Part Four concludes with thelessons, implication and unsolved problems in the translation project.
