Practice Study Report On E-C Translation Of Excerpted Historical Works

The thesis is about the E-C translation of the chosen materials of a non-literature historical work, The Cambridge History of Africa:From 1870 to 1905. The author chooses the historical work because it is of great value and it opens a window for the introduction of the African geography, history, culture and religion to the Chinese readers. The author translates the selected excerpts and composes a translation practice report of the translation activity.The author has done many translations during her study for the MTI degree. Her choice of the translation of the selected materials of the famous historical work plays a vital part in the translator’s translation experiences. The author undertakes to study the translation process and the translation activity with case analysis. In the report, the author gives some background information about the translation project and illustrates the translation process, especially the preparations for the translation action, including the unification of the proper nouns, the analysis of the textual traits of the historical work and a combing of the African history. In the effect assessment part, the author talks about the procedure of it and the quality of the task, with the conclusion that the translated work has realized Nida’s natural equivalence. In terms of the analysis of the translation action, the author introduces the Functional Equivalence Theory and the application of it to the translation materials. The translation of the famous work has come across some translation difficulties, such as the difficulty in the translation of the names of persons and places, the translation of long and difficult sentences and the coherence. The Functional Equivalence Theory has provided some translation strategies to deal with the translation problems. The adoption of addition and omission, the readjustment of the order of the sentences and division and synthesization are the translation strategies that are applied to in the translation activity.The translation report inclines to offer some theoretical enlightenment and principle guidance on the E-C translation of historical works and appeal the latter scholars and researchers to do the translation of historical work and further study it.
