A Translation Project Report Of Speaking With Vampires: Rumor And History In Colonial Africa (Chapter Two)

This is a translation report on Speaking with vampires: rumor and history incolonial Africa, of which Chapter2"Historicizing Rumor and Gossip" is thesource text. The book mainly discusses how rumor and gossip have made aninfluence on the history of colonial Africa. Chapter2mainly deals with how rumorand gossip have influenced people in colonial Africa and in which way they areused as sources for history writing. The whole report is divided into four parts: PartOne is the translation project description, including project background, objectivesand significance. Part Two is the background of the source text, includingintroduction to the author, introduction to the book, and the main contents andlanguage features of the source text. Part Three is about translation difficulties andmethods, containing translation aids, translation theory, translation difficulties andmethods. The difficulties lie in the translation of African names of persons andconstitutions as well as large amounts of long sentences. The theory used in thisreport is functional equivalence theory of Eugene A. Nida. The methods includelinear translation，splitting, recasting, and so on. Part Four concludes with thelessons, enlightenment and unsolved problems in the translation project.
