Impact Of Japanese English Speaker’s Accent On Simultaneous Interpretation And Coping Strategies

English is the main language used in the majority of international conferences. Speakers of different countries may speak accented English and that could cause trouble to interpreters. According to Daniel Giles’s Effort Model theory, interpreters tend to devote more processing capacity to the Listening and Analysis Effort when dealing with accented English, thus leaving less capacity available for Short-term Memory and Speech Production, causing loss of information or resulting in deteriorated performance. Therefore, the study on how accented English impact English Chinese simultaneous interpretation and coping strategies is important.This paper uses Daniel Gale’s Effort Model to analyze the influence of Japanese accent on English Chinese simultaneous interpretation and proves that accent is a problem trigger and could cause failure sequences. The paper also recommends coping strategies based on the theory and experiment data. The paper has six chapters:Chapter One is introduction; Chapter Two is literary review; Chapter Three introduces the theory; Chapter Eive is the experiment result and analysis and Chapter Six is the summary. The experiment and survey of this paper conclude that accented English does have negative impacts on English Chinese simultaneous interpreters’ performance. By reducing capacity requirement on Listening and analysis Short-term Memory and Speech Production, interpreters will have enough processing capacity to deal with accented English and yield better results.
