In August,2016,the author served as the guide interpreter for a young lady from New Zealand,escorting her to visit main tourist attractions in Guangzhou,so she could experience the cultures and customs in Guangzhou thoroughly.Based on one of the interpreting tasks,the guide interpreting in the Chen Clan Academy,this report mainly consists of five parts,task description,pre-task preparation,quality control,case studies as well as conclusion.Guide interpreting has a close relation with cross-cultural communication.Meanwhile,the guide interpreter shoulders the responsibility of showing the country’s positive image to foreign tourists.Therefore,the author with some guide interpreting experience still made full preparation before the task.Considering the task is likely to refer to many culture-loaded and informative expressions,huge differences between Chinese and English,etc,the author got first hand key points on the interpreting task through contacting with the Chinese tour guide,did field research and predicted potential difficulties during the interpreting practice.According to the Skopos theory put forward by Hans J.Vermeer,the guide interpreting strategies,including transliteration plus annotation,amplification and paraphrase are identified for the interpreting practice.In addition,the report concentrates on how to use these strategies to solve difficulties during the interpreting process by analyzing the case studies.After the interpreting task,the author fully realizes the importance of guide interpreting experience and pre-task preparation.Besides,becoming a qualified guide interpreter needs to reinforce professional knowledge and skills as well as being well-read.Finally,some advice is given to people interested in guide interpreting.
