The Tiger is worshipped as the nations historic totem and also a focal element of Chinese traditional costume. Since ancient times, the tiger apron patterns have had a profound cultural connotation and great aesthetic value in the Chinese culture. This is most vividly reflected in modern children’s clothing. In this paper, the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology’s Museum of Ethnic Costumes, physical measurement samples and data were collected and analysed. The origins of the tiger apron patterns were traced and they were found to represent a strong, elaborate, and auspicious connotation. Then the characteristics of the different shapes were analyzed, compared, and then summarized to explore in three dimension the patterns and how the patterns differed between demand and functions. Finally, this paper focuses on how to innovate the traditional tiger patterns and apply them to contemporary costume designs. Discussions on the design of innovative applications from several areas, from decorative materials and fabrics, to the recreation with colour, patterns, and crafts. This paper aims to give designers of tiger costumes for children a deeper understanding of the pattern and also gives a contemporary fashion design lesson with emphasis on traditional dress culture.
