Woodcarving patterns on apron panels of Shaanxi Residential Buildings (SRB), of distinct traditional cultural characters, unique artistic charm and regional features, are part of Chinese folk traditional patterns as well as Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage. Therefore, it's important to systemically study the culture implication, characteristics of appreciation of the beauty, aesthetics value of these woodcarving patterns.This paper concentrates on the figure characteristics of the woodcarving patterns on apron panels of SRB. Firstly, a holistic analysis of Chinese traditional patterns is presented from an aesthetic point. The great form is without shape, the same is true of the Chinese traditional patterns, which are mainly influenced by ancient Chinese philosophies and aesthetics. The woodcarving patterns on apron panels of SRB belong to Chinese traditional patterns, and they are same in artistic conception and vividness. Moreover, they share similarity in subject, philosophy and moral with those in other regions of China. Secondly, the relationships between the figure characteristics of the woodcarving patterns on apron panels and Chinese traditional culture, Sanqin District culture and Shaanxi folk art are studied, which indicate that these patterns have distinct regional cultural features as well as high value of art, history and culture. What's more, they are basically plain and profound. At last, case studies of SRB are put forward. Moreover, the commonness and specialty of the woodcarving patterns on apron panels of these buildings are discussed.This paper deeply and systemically explores the woodcarving patterns on apron panels of SRB, which have distinguishing features like plain beauty, profoundness and concinnity. It could provide evidential and theoretical assistant for development of Shaanxi folk art and protection of Shaanxi Intangible Cultural Heritage.
