There are lots of works with the theme of stone appreciation in ancient Chinese paintings, and these works have come down from the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. The unique cultural phenomenon of stone appreciation in ancient China is inseparable with Chinese literal paintings. For the scholars in ancient China, poetry, calligraphy, painting and stone appreciation are not separate, which merges into a unique oriental phenomenon of culture and humanity. The staring point of stone appreciation culture in ancient China lies in the “cultural personality” of scholars and bureaucrats. It not only starts from the artistic aesthetics culture, but also expresses the culture of “cultural personality” of scholars and bureaucrats, which is a culture of “moral spirit” to express themselves by stone appreciation. The introduction and research on the formation and development of Chinese stone appreciation paintings is of great significance to the creation of paintings.
