Yan Zhen’s Novels On Intellectuals Writing

In the history of modern and contemporary Chinese Literature,the literary creation with the intellectual as the subject has been a hot topic in the writers’ creation,all of these works reflect the living conditions and spiritual demands of the intellectuals in different historical periods. From late twentieth Century to early twenty-first Century, our country has experienced great changes in society, politics and economy. Especially since the implementation of market economy in 1990 s, economic discourse has become the mainstream and focus of the whole society. These make the "Enlightenment",which once was the center of the society — intellectuals, rapidly marginalized.This social change also makes the intellectuals’ real life and spirit produce sharp contradictions, intellectuals toward differentiation but no matter what choices they make, they barely get rid of the plight of their real life and spiritual world.Yan Zhen, a contemporary writer, is based on the social historical background and his intellectual identity, with his compassion and critical strokes written intellectuals’ helpless under the economy context.Under the market economy, utilitarianism with its compulsive assimilation power force the intellectuals into the humanistic spirit and moral crisis.Try to explore the status of intellectuals in the context of contemporary society.All of these express the author’s deep consciousness of suffering and reflection.In this paper, intellectuals of Yan Zhen’s novels is the main study object, based on a close reading of the texts,cultural analysis method and Image analysis method,in order to reveal the existence and spiritual dilemma of the intellectuals since 1990 s, explore the social factors and origin of ideology behind Yan Zhen’s intellectuals writing, and delve into the artistic features of Yan Zhen’s novel. Yan Zhen’s four novels published span nearly 20 years, In order to facilitate the discussion,the time sequence is not the only clue but focusing on the integrity of the writer’s writing.The article is divided into three parts.In the first chapter —Different Predicaments of the Intellectuals, as the differentiation of intellectuals group, intellectuals towards the traditional culture with different attitude and their social reality in different situation, so I tried to divide the intellectuals into the three types, explore the embarrassing situation of intellectuals. In the second chapter —Analysis on the Reason of Intellectuals’ Predicament. On the combination of social and historical knowledge, analyzes the reasons behind different value orientations of intellectuals to understand the profound social and history connotation of intellectuals’ choice; In the third chapter —Artistic Techniques of writing on Intellectuals’ Predicament. With the author’s artistic pursuit, unique character narration and the image using highlighted the uniqueness of Yan Zhen’s writing on intellectuals.
