The script of the modern Sichuan-Opera Robbing the Bureaucrat(Dao Guan Ji) is completed to recreate characters particularly in terms of opera. The script is adopted from the chapter of the same name in the novel The Ten Bedtime Stories(Ye Tan Shi Ji)by Ma Shitu, and also referred to the film A Chivalrous Magistrate(Xiang Ma Xian Zhang) scripted by Qian Daoyuan and the film Let The Bullets Fly(Rang Zi Dan Fei)by Jiang Wen. In the opera, the major character Zhang Shan is brave, loyal, faithful, and kindhearted, with some degree of simplicity and brashness yet. His bumpy life experience and good nature make himself become a glimmer of light in the dark time, and also bring hopes to people. By recreating characters like Zhang Shan and Huang Tianbang, the script would imply various individuals’ destiny and fate at that time. The opera bears the sense of individualistic heroism, and it brings out the glory of human nature belonging to the robber with the title “county magistrate,” through the detailed depiction of the character. A strong feeling of awe-inspiring righteousness, which makes Zhang Shan the figure with most cognitive value in this opera, is exactly the spirit and soul with which endowed the character. This is significant for the promotion of Chinese traditional culture and the creation of opera art.
