A Study On Phonetic Annotation Changes Of Xinhua Dictionary

Xinhua dictionary is the first significant dictionary in the history of Chinese dictionaries after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Arranging characters in Chinese sequence, explaining words and taking examples with the written form of modern Chinese, Xinhua dictionary is a modern small Chinese dictionary which has both influence and authority. Since the People’s Education Press published the first edition in 1953, Xinhua dictionary has become increasingly perfect in terms of glyph, phonetic notation and meaning after revised so many times. What’s more, it meets the needs of times development and at the same time controls the size of the dictionary in a good way. In this paper, we chose the representative version of Xinhua dictionary, established each representative version of the Xinhua dictionary database about phonetic change, and conducted the study of phonetic change from the synchronic and diachronic stratification, using the method of statistical analysis, literature research, as well as the combining of quantitative analysis and comprehensive description method. Furthermore, we have pointed out the shortage of Xinhua dictionary, and put several relevant suggestions forward in order to make a contribution to perfect the phonetic of Xinhua dictionary. This article is divided into four chapters:The first chapter is the introduction. This paper briefly introduces the publishing background, version and the research status of Xinhua dictionary. In addition, it introduces the object, significance and methods of this study in a general way.In the second chapter, we demonstrate the phonetic notation changes of Xinhua dictionary in detail from the diachronic stratification. Through data analysis, the diachronic study on phonetic notation of the Xinhua dictionary can be divide into three stages--the start-up stage, stage of reform stage, stable development stage--and each stage has its own characteristics. We analyze the reasons of the phonetic notation changes and verify whether it complies with the law of development of phonetics and the standard of Xinhua dictionary and conclude the position of the Xinhua dictionary.The third chapter is the synchronic study on phonetic notation part. We contrast Xinhua dictionary and Putonghua Pronouncing discrepancy Shenyinbiao, find out the difference of phonetic notation, and summarizes the regularity.In the fourth chapter is the phonetic advice about Xinhua dictionary. Based on the present and future-oriented, this chapter mainly combines with the latest achievements in the study of language and the language variation disturbed by the Internet. according to the phonetic problems and shortcomings of the latest edition, we put forward some reasonable suggestions, including advice about the phonetic notation of the ancient and modern character, the four tones separating meaning character and the rarely used words.The fifth chapter is the conclusion part. In this chapter, we mainly summarize this article from a macro standpoint and demonstrate the innovation and perspective of this study, as well as the direction of the further study.
