With the development of the cross-cultural communication, literary translation has gradually become one of the common types in translation practice. This kind of text type poses a great influence on bilateral cultural communication and understanding promotion. This is a translation project report of a novel named Pig Boy, written by an Australian female writer J. C. Burke. This crime novel mainly depicts the bullied experience of a boy named Damon in his adolescence and a murder that he saw afterwards, in order to illustrate the complexity of humanity and the positive influence of the true friendship through the exquisite psychological and environment description. This report gives an introduction to the background of the translation project including the project origin and project significance at the beginning, putting forward the translation target that "meaning equivalence goes first". It also enumerates the difficulties that have been met in the translating process with examples, and tries to tackle those problems about characters’languages, rhetorical devices and long sentences with literal translation, free translation and other translation methods under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory. It is concluded that the translation of young adult literature is not a simple language equivalence, and it should be carefully and patiently translated. The translator should get rid of the yoke of the source language, fluently express the deep meaning between the lines, and make a balance in terms of translation purpose, function, the meaning of the novel and readers’ feelings between the source language and the targeted language on the basis of deep understanding of the original text. Thus, the translation work can not only make readers produce emotional resonance, but also achieve the profound communication besides the novel.
