As a special interpretation of science intended for a general audience, popular science text carries readable and informative science content and leads an important role in promoting national scientific quality. In view of the important role of popular science and the promising future of information sharing, the translation of popular science text is accordingly important. The paper is a practice report on the E-C translation of a U.S.best-selling popular science book Living Forever Young: The 10 Secrets to Optimal Strength,Energy &Vitality, written by Skip Archimedes.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the author translated the book in six months and attempts to discuss in the paper how to achieve functional equivalence on lexical, syntactic, textual and stylistic level, hence proposing corresponding translation techniques. This report can be divided into five chapters.Chapter one mainly introduces the background and significance of the report, foreign and domestic studies on popular science translation.Chapter two analyzes theoretical foundation, focusing on the text type of the popular science text, introduces functional equivalence theory and its applicability.Chapter three illustrates the description of the translation report. In the fourth chapter, the author explores the applications of functional equivalence theory in popular science translation and discusses various translation techniques on the basis of four levels: to realize equivalence in lexical level, the translator adopts annotation and paraphrasing;at the syntactic level,in order to be more “natural”,the author applies amplification, omission and conversion;at the textual level, the author adopts amplification to stress the cohesion;at the stylistic level, annotation is utilized to translate scientific knowledge.Chapter five concludes findings and limitations in the translation process. It reaches the conclusion that functional equivalence theory can guide the translation of popular science text effectively. The author expects that this translation report may serve as a reference for future popular science translation and enrich the academic archive of researches on popular science translation.
