As a French woman writer, Marguerite Duras has become famous in France by her novel L’Amant. Thanks to L’Amant, we awarded the Prix Goncourt to her in 1984. This novel attracts also a great number of readers in China. Less than two years after the publication of L’Amant, there came out several Chinese versions, which aroused a "fever" of Duras for several years. Among all the translations, the one of Mr. WANG Daoqian has become very popular in China.Since many readers are satisfied with the translation of Mr. WANG Daoqian, we wonder why it is so successful. What factors drive WANG Daoqian to create such a wonderful translation? What positive factors influence the reception of this translation in China? Through the comparison of the different Chinese versions of L’Amant, we are going to get some inspirations and thoughts on the reception of translations. In this thesis, we are going to base our research on the Critique of translations of Antoine Berman to compare the different Chinese versions of L’Amant. Here we choose three representative versions-the ones of WANG Daoqian, WANG Dongliang and LI Yumin. In Pour une critique des traductions:John Donne, Antoine Berman proposes a method for the critique of translations. The route is divided into several successive steps-the reading of the translation and the original, the search of the translator, the confrontation, and the reception of the translation. In the first chapter of the thesis, we will look for the translating subject and analyse the translative position, the translative project and the horizon of the translator. In the second chapter, we will make the confrontation among the three Chinese versions of L’Amant. In the last chapter, we will research the reception of the translation of WANG Daoqian and analyse the factors that influence its good reception in the 1980’s in China.
