A Translation Report On The Color Of Secrets(Chapter One-Chapter Five)

This project selected the novel of an British female writer Lindsay Ashford — The Color of Secrets. Ashford worked as a reporter for the BBC and a freelance journalist for a number of national magazines and newspapers. This novel narrated that in the two years preceding the D-day landings, Eva meets Bill and falls in love with him, and also narrated the growth process of their mix-raced daughter in that special social period. The author disclosed the racial problem in British society and discuss about that, meanwhile described in the reverse and the reverse side. The chosen text of this translation project consists of the prologue and the first five chapters, whose contents include: the working and living conditions of the heroine Eva in Wolverhampton; the process of acquaintances and love between Eva and Bill.As a novel, the original text is partial to a documentary literature, which is characterized by the following features in content and structure. Firstly, novel is rich and exquisite in characterization, psychology, behavior and conversation; integrated and changeable in plot narration; detailed but special environment description. Secondly, the author created the original text after several interviews of mix-raced families, and the character and places are real. Thus it is partial to a documentary literary, which interiorize the points discussed.To sum up, the key points and difficult points are the translations of characters’ description in portrait, behavior and psychology. Thus, according to the characteristics of the two language and that of fictional translation, this project mainly analyzes how to vividly give the readers the text messages and emotional information of the original text. In order to convey the equivalent artistic enjoyment, translation need accurate understanding and careful diction, and meanwhile take the difference in the two languages and in the mind habit of the readers. The translator tries to get the accurate implication by searching for the parallel texts and referring to some dictionaries and then represent the meaning in a natural Chinese way.The target text aims to extend the knowledge scope and help scholars and historians to adopt an open mind for racial problems. The conclusions based on the translating process intend to offer practical suggestions for the translation with same characters.
