A Report On The First Three Parts Of The Translation Of Rulemaking VS. Democracy:Judging And Nudging Public Participation That Counts

The material of this translation report is chosen from the first three parts of the thesis “Rulemaking VS. Democracy: Judging and Nudging Public Participation that Counts” written by Prof. Cynthia R. Farina, Prof. Mary Newhart and Prof. Josiah Heidt of Cornell University.The translation report consists of four parts: task description, translation procedures, case study, and summary. Task description includes the source of material to be translated, the introduction of the author and the thesis. Translation procedures introduce pre-translation, the difficulties of this translation practice. During the translation, the combination of “literal translation” and “free translation” is adopted,and different dictionaries are employed as well. After revised for several times, the translation is finally decided. Case study, the core of the translation report, describes the ideas and skills of translator. In this part, the translation process and translation skills are analyzed from the aspects of vocabulary, syntax and context. The last part is the summary of the translator’s experience, including the gains, the limitations and the expectations for the future translation.By translating the material, the translator realizes that it is necessary to master the two languages precisely and understanding the relevant background comprehensively for the perfect translation. Besides, the translator’s translation skills need to be improved through more translation practice.
