Research On The Translation Of Vocabulary With Chinese Characteristicsin The Report On The Work Of The Government

The Report on the Work of the Government(RWG) reviews the government work during the past year, and puts forward both general work arrangements and major tasks for the cur rent year, including politics, economy, science technology, culture, people’s life, etc. It has become the most important and authoritative source for the world to comprehend China’s situation. However, there are a lot of vocabularies with the new concepts of times and Chinese characteristics which are difficult for foreigners to understand. This is because these lexical items stand for culture, society, history, and political meaning in Chinese special cultural context, which have a close relationship with our unique social environment. This thesis tries to explore the English translation of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics in RWG 2015 from the perspective of Functionalist Skopos Theory hoping to provide new orientation and referring significance for the translation study of political documents.The research methods involved in research of this thesis are mainly: classification, comparative analysis, and exemplification. The author firstly collected and classified the vocabulary with Chinese characteristics from both Chinese and English version of the report, then labeled rules of Functionalist Skopos Theory, the translation strategies and methods applied in them one by one. What is more, the author compared the Chinese version of these items with the ir English version, especially the different translations of the same expression. Meanwhile, a large number of examples from the report were analyzed through case study in order to study the translation of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics from the point of Functionalist Skopos Theory.The thesis firstly introduced the background, significance and objective of this study. Then it talked about the literature review on RWG and vocabulary with Chinese characteristics from abroad and at home respectively. The following part systematically presented the outlook and general comprehension of Functionalist Skopos Theory including its four representatives and their opinions. This part also dealed with the three rules of Functionalist Skopos Theory, that is, Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. In addition, the author explained the relationship between Functionalist Skopos Theory and domestication as well as foreignization in this part, too. Afterwards, the author firstly introduced the subjects, methodology, and result of the research, then analyzed the application of Functionalist Skopos Theory in the translation of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics in government work report by cases studies. In the end, the author drew a conclusion to the whole thesis with major findings and limitations of the study and la id out suggestions for the further research on political documents.According to the discussion above, it can be seen that Skopos rule was applied most, while coherence rule and fidelity rule were used less in the translation of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics in RWG 2015, one of formal political documents. The translation strategy of this research had a tendency of domestication with the practical translation methods like literal translation, free translation, literal translation plus free translation, and literal translation plus annotation. Functionalist Skopos Theory had strong explanatory power to various language phenomena as a pragmatic theory. The vocabulary with Chinese character istics in RWG carrying rich cultural connotation and translation was the bridge of communication between Chinese and English cultures, so it was of great significance for the translation study.
