"Dream Of Red Mansions" Custom Vocabulary Translation Dimension Of Material Life And Study

Folk vocabulary reflects the linguistic feature and the local characteristics of a nation, the folk vocabulary in material life derives from life, from which can reflect the difference of all nationalities’ living environment, dietary habits, ways of living and other aspects, therefore, researching the folk vocabulary in material life is of great significance to understand the different ethnic culture. Being located in China’s northwest border area,Kashgar is a place where minority nations live together, so this paper chose the Uyghur "Dream of Red Mansions" translated by Bachmann·Mamou as object of research. As one of the four major classical novels, "Dream of Red Mansions" contains abundant material life folk vocabulary. Having a wide variety of species, the folk vocabulary can be divided into apparel, food, vehicle and residential buildings and so on, according to their classification. Researching the translating strategies and methods of the folk vocabulary is helpful to communicate and learn each other and to reduce cultural friction between two different nations, meanwhile, it is of great practical value to provide reference for translating and researching on folk culture during the second language teaching.The paper mainly works in study on the applied characteristics and methods of the folk vocabulary appearing in the front sixty chapters through ways of document analysis and textual analysis, and it also analyzes the translators’ translating strategies and methods of the folk vocabulary in the Uyghur translations.Firstly, the paper elaborates the function of the material life, and then it classifies the folk vocabulary appearing in the front sixty chapters, next it does research on the Uyghur translation of them, lastly it concludes the material folk vocabulary in the "Dream of Red Mansions". The precise equivalent folk words between Han and Uyghur are usually translated through strategy of alienation to retain the exoticism of the target text. To those nonequivalent words between Han and Uyghur are usually translated through strategy of general naturalization to conform to the target language and the cultural norms. The translating methods being adopted in this paper are literal translation, liter translation of filling, free translation, plus lexical, etc, and it also makes a concrete analysis of the classification.
