Explicitation is an inevitable phenomenon in translation, which has drawn an increasing number of scholars’attention in recent years. Currently, the study on explicitation mainly focuses on examining the existence of explication, exploring the classification of explicitation and analyzing reasons of explicitation. However, few researches discuss that how to adopt strategies to realize the explicitation in the practice of interpreting and whether the explicitation is reasonable or not. Based on the 2015 Premier Li Keqiang’s press conference, the thesis attempts to explore the phenomena of explicitation in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. The thesis classifies the explicitation in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting into three types:obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation and pragmatic explicitation. To be more detailed, optional explicitation consists of logic explicitation and tone and stand explicitation. Pragmatic explicitation contains situational information explicitation and cultural information explicitation. In order to deliver the meaning of the source language, interpreters can adopt addition, voices conversion, substitution, reconstruction, free interpreting and explanatory interpreting to realize the explicitation. Explicitation can make the target language’s logic and meaning become clearer so that the speech can be better perceived by the target audience. In addition, the thesis also finds the existence of unreasonable explicitation. Unreasonable explicitation may lead to the ambiguity and deviation of the target language respectively, which will bring about difficulties to the communication between the two sides. Therefore, in order to achieve the best communicative result, interpreters should take different factors into account, such as the linguistic and socio-cultural differences between Chinese and English, the situation and setting of the speech, and adopt appropriate strategies to make the implicit information in the source language become explicit.Through the study, the author hopes to enrich the study on explicitation in interpreting and make the author’s own contribution to the further advancement in terms of the theory and practice of interpreting.
