With the deepening of economic globalization, the communication and cooperation among countries have been strengthened. The leader of a country is the first spokesman of its image. The speeches of leaders on international occasions contain the ideas and attitude of the country. In this way, the quality of interpreting of these speeches will make a direct influence on the delivery of country’s idea and attitude towards some affairs. Also, it influences the image of the country and its leader.For a long time, researches about relevance theory have been mainly focusing on pragmatics, and the research of relevance theory on interpreting can be further studied. This thesis takes the five C-E interpretation of Xi Jinping on international occasions as objects to study the process of interpreting by the method of case study under the guidance of relevance theory. It will mainly focus on the influence of restriction factors in ostensive-inferential communication towards interpreter’s choice on solving difficulties during interpreting. The aim of this study is to analyze the guiding function of relevance theory during the practice of interpreting.Through this case study, the conclusion of this thesis can be drawn as follows: First, the relevance theory has strong explanatory power towards the practice of interpreting. The process of interpreting is actually a double ostensive-inferential process. Second, the process of interpreting is actually the process of finding the optimal relevance, and delivering the informative and communicative intention. To find the optimal relevance during interpreting is to realize the optimal relevance among interpretation, context, and the cognitive context of audience. In this way, in order to grasp the optimal relevance accurately and ensure the quality of interpreting, the interpreters must try to accumulate lexical, logical and encyclopedia information as much as possible during daily practice.
