A Project Report On The Translation Of Mystery Novel Vortex

Vortex is a team translation project in which the author participated entirely on an internet platform, translating the mystery novel Vortex by Matt Carrell from English to Chinese. After the project was finished, the author rethought the translation process and summarized the difficulties and corresponding translation strategies from three aspects including words, sentences and cross-cultural elements.The results show that the selection of word meanings, free translation of words and translation of financial terms are the main difficulties of word translation in this project. The selection of correct meanings to ensure the faithfulness of the translation, the use of free translation to keep the accordance with habitual Chinese expressions and the way of translating financial terms are the main problems to be considered. In sentence translation, different translating methods should be used according to different situations. Oral expressions should be used in the translation of direct speeches, while translation techniques, such as splitting, recombination, amplification and omission, can be used to deal with long and difficult sentences. As for the cross-cultural elements in this book, it is determined through team discussion that domesticating translation should be used in translation of people’s names in this book, and the notes should be brief and at the just right level.The experience in translation and project implementation gained through this project will be the guidance of the translation work in the future, and is hoped to provide advice to the translators participating in the translation projects of mystery novels.
