The translation material is extracted from the first chapter of Empire, State and Society. It mainly introduces Britain’s geography, culture and social conditions as well as the development status in the aspects of agriculture, industry, population and legislation around 1830.The translator adopts both foreignization and domestication as the translation strategies in accordance with the social science texts and the stylistic, lexical, syntactic and cultural characteristics of the source text through intensive reading. The translation report is carefully written based on the experience from the translation practice, which aims to describe the difficulties in translating the text and the translation skills applied in the process of translation. The translation report includes four parts: the translation task description, the translation process, the translation cases analysis and the translation practice summary. The first part is a brief description of the translation task about the material source, the author and the contents of the translation material; the second part contains preparation work, difficulties in the process of translation, and text reviewing, polishing and finalization; the third part is the core of the report, which presents the thinking process and the application of various translation skills in detail by analyzing difficulties in vocabulary, syntax and culture in the translation text; the fourth part contains the translator’s gains and reflections in the process of translation.
