Neglect has important influence on child even to the adult. The children who have been neglected are prone to confront many problems in the process of growth, for example, depression, anxiety, fear and low self-esteem and so on. This study aims to explore the relationships between neglect, coping style and self-esteem, and to explore what can children do when confronted with neglect and what different influence coping style can exert on self-esteem. Neglect happens, when children’s basic physiological needs or psychological needs can’t be satisfied, which have damaged children’s healthy development. Individual adopts the adjustment way of cognitive, emotional and behavioral in order to keep balance in face of pressure, which is refereed to as coping style. Self-esteem can be defined that individual makes positive cognitive evaluation of himself.This study adopts the questionnaire survey, using the Chinese urban middle school students aged 12 to 17 neglect evaluation questionnaire(Jian-ping Pan, 2007), Simplified coping style questionnaire(Ya-ning Xie, 1998),and Self-esteem scale(Rosenberg, 1965), selecting 650 high school students,which come from Harbin, Heilongjiang province,and Fuyang, Anhui province. The questionnaire be mainly measured in the class, and collected by the teacher. The effective datum were analyzed by SPSS22.0, Amos17.0 software etc.The following conclusions:(1) There is a significant negative correlation between neglect and positive coping style;(2) There is a significant positive correlation between neglect and negative coping style;(3) There is a significant negative correlation between neglect and self-esteem;(4) There is a significant positive correlation between positive coping style and self-esteem;(5) There is a significant negative correlation between negative coping style and self-esteem;(6) The mediation effect of negative coping style and positive coping style between the neglect and selfesteem is significant. We find that the high school students coping styles between neglect and self-esteem plays a significant intermediary role through this study, which confirmed by structural equation model(SEM). So, we can change the self-esteem degree through selecting positive coping style in high school students who has been neglected. |
