As a bridge that crosses from the ancient Chinese and contemporary Chinese, the modern Chinese plays a very crucial role of connecting the ancient and contemporary times, which explores the track of development of the language. Preposition is an important part of speech in language study in expanding expressive capacity, marking semantic relation, labeling special sentence patterns, expressing semantic requirement. The further study of the modern Chinese prepositions not only promotes the in-depth knowledge of the contemporary Chinese vocabulary system and grammar system, but also provides the significant transitional stage of connecting the ancient and contemporary Chinese prepositions. WuSheng Xi created by Li Yu is the representative work of the short vernacular novels at the beginning of the Qing dynasty. The simply vivid language and the colloquial speech are the characteristics of itself. And the novel provides plenty of language materials which reflect a strong era characteristics, leading to have a good research. This paper takes WuSheng Xi as the research object, adopts the method of combining quantitative analysis, analyses the syntax, semantic and pragmatic function, and then does a comprehensive, system, detailed research of the prepositions in WuSheng Xi.Including the introduction and conclusion, this article is divided into five chapters. The introduction part mainly introduces the research object, research significance, research methods and other related issues. The second chapter analyzes the syntactic aspect, examines the structure form and explores the syntactic function of the prepositional phrase. On the semantic aspect, the third chapter analyses the eighty-two prepositions on the based of the quantitative and qualitative analysis. According to the semantic characteristics, the prepositions in WuSheng Xi are divided into six categories to do a detailed analysis. And then we can clear the specific grammar characteristic of the different prepositions. From the angel of pragmatics, the fourth chapter analyses three pragmatic functions including topic marker, the focus of the highlights on the discourse coherence, and discusses the looming situation of the prepositions. The last part is the conclusion part of this article. On the basis of detailed research, the paper summarizes the general characteristics of the prepositions and summarizes the seven conclusive opinions.
