A Study On The Narrative Structure Of "Choon Hyang Jeon"

The thesis researched and analysised the narrative structure of "Choon Hyang Jeon",which was the classical literary writing of North Korea and delved into its surface structure and deep structure to explore the unique traditional beauty and charm.The surface structure of "Choon Hyang Jeon" has the following three. First is "two partial structure" inherited from the ancient social tale.The second is "five partial structure" inherited from the ancient character tale. The third is "seven partial structure" inherited from the ancient unfeeling tale. So "Choon Hyang Jeon" inherited multiple traditional structures of the ancient folk stories reasonably, at the same time, was reprocessed flexibly. Noteworthy is that the narrative structure of "Choon Hyang Jeon" inherited the traditional narrative mode of the ancient folk tales of the Korean peninsula and on this basis to expand,alternate, add and then processed into the existing narrative structure. Its basic structure is the pattern of contradiction between parents and children. The tale of the conflict between parents and children is mainly about the free love of young men and women was hindered by both parents. Such narrative mode is common in the folk story of the early feudal period of the Korean Peninsula.This kind of narrative structure is very simple and plain. In the first part is about the contadiction between parents and children which is common in the daily life, and then half part is surreal story of ghost weddings or fetish. "Choon Hyang Jeon" made such a simple and plain structure as its basic narrative structure and also accept "five partial structure" in the ancient character tale and "seven partial structure " in the ancient unfleeing tale. "Choon Hyang Jeon" inherited the tale in the ancient Korea reasonably and also made its narrative structure full of charm.The deep structure of "Choon Hyang Jeon" can be divided into performing structure and biographical structure. First, the performing structure can be divided into dynamic structure and static structure.It’s the combination of the dynamic structure which can make random strain with the change of times and audience and the static structure that can keep the basic context of "Choon Hyang Jeon". This kind of narrative composition is the clever use of the ancient Korean pansori art performance mode in the novel creation. The deep structure shows the narrative structure of "Choon Hyang Jeon" and is connected with the narrative archetype of "Heroic Biography" in the ancient myths. It shows that the narrative mode of ancient Korean tale not only lose connection with the narrative archetype of heroic biography and also sometimes it was back to the source, from wich to draw the kind of magic power, to construct a unique traditional asethetic narrative structure.By using the method of structuralism and narratology, the result of the study is as follows:the narrative structure of "Choon Hyang Jeon" is very developmental and practical structure and has a unique traditional beauty.
