E-C Translation Of Chapter 8 And Chapter 9 Of Lives Of The Family: Stories Of Fate And Circumstance And A Critical Commentary

This project consists of two parts. The first part is an English-to-Chinese translation of Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of Lives of the Family:Stories of Fate and Circumstance, a non-fiction by Denise Chong, a Chinese Canadian writer. The second part is a critical commentary based on the translation, in which discussions are made of how functional equivalence in translation can be achieved with the use of appropriate translation strategies.The original text of the project is excerpted from Lives of the Family:Stories of Fate and Circumstance, a book that tells of the lives of some Chinese immigrant families to Canada. It is hoped that the present project may help Chinese readers to get some knowledge about Chinese Canadians and the history of Chinese immigrants to Canada.The critical commentary is composed of four sections. The first section introduces the original text, the difficulties of translation, the solutions to the difficulties and the significance of the translation project. The second section briefly presents the theoretical framework, that is, the theory about functional equivalence proposed by Eugene Nida, which is used in the process of translation to produce a faithful and natural target text and make the same response of the readers of the target text as that of the readers of the source text. The third section discusses the adoption of functional equivalence and illustrates in detail the strategies employed by the translator, such as combination of literal translation and free translation, addition, conversion and division. The fourth section is a conclusion about what the translator learns from this translation project.
