On Translating Long English Sentences Of EST Into Chinese From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Rapid development of science and technology leads to increasingly frequentexchange of technical information between China and the west, hence EST (English forScience and Technology) translation plays a more significant role. Compared with thegeneral Non-tech English style, EST has its own typical features, such as the extensiveuse of long sentences. Long sentences contain huge information and complex structures,so how to translate long sentences well is crucial. This thesis has analyzed ESTtranslation of long sentences on the basis of Nida’s functional equivalence theory. Tofulfill the functional equivalence between the source text and target text and ensure theaccuracy of the source text, the author believes that reader’s feelings should be taken intoconsideration, and relatively flexible translation strategies should be chosen. So the targettext can express scientific and technical information accurately and smoothly. Based ontranslation texts, the thesis introduced syntactic features of EST, analyzing how toemploy four kinds of translation strategies in translation. EST has syntactic features asfollows: nominalization, the frequent use of non-predicate verb, parallel structures andpassive voice. According to different syntactic features, four kinds of translationstrategies for EST are introduced, which are named "syntactic linearity","inverted-ordertranslation","division","methods of synthesis" for the reference of readers.
