This is a practice report based on the writer’s escort interpreting during her internship in Ningxia Foreign Affairs Office. Through this practice, the writer was able to better understand the importance of an interpreter in the communication between the speakers and the listeners. In this report, the writer tries to reflect on her strengths and weaknesses from the perspective of Schaffner’s translation competence and draws a conclusion to help her improve in the future practice. An interpretation process involves the interaction among speaker, the listener and the interpreter. The interpreter is essential for the process, because he/she is a passive information transmitter, active information communicator and a cultural mediator. Therefore, the key of an effective interpretation relies on the interpreter’s translation competence, which, to a large extent, can be reflected by his/her language competence, subject competence, cultural competence and transfer competence. The writer first describes the task background, preparation work and the specific implementation process in the report, and then under the guidance of Schaffner’s translation competence, she chooses a number of representative cases from the perspective of language competence, subject competence, cultural competence and transfer competence, analyzing whether she fulfilled the interpreting task. At last, the writer makes a self-evaluation and comes to a conclusion in the hope that she can draw from this experience for better performance next time.
