In teaching Chinese as a foreign language, teaching Chinese characters to foreigners has been a weak state for a long time. There was a general agreement that it’s difficult to teach and learn Chinese characters. On one hand, the problem is a result of those Chinese characters is ideogram leading to them hard to read, to remember, to write. On the other hand, it also has a great relationship with the mode of teaching Chinese characters. For a long time, comprehensive course or intensive reading course is the core, listening and speaking course is auxiliary class. This mode emphasizes on cultivating students’ listening and speaking ability, but ignore the students’ reading and writing skills and knowledge of Chinese characters even using vocabulary teaching instead of Chinese characters teaching. With the researchers in-depth reflection on problems of teaching and feedback about the teaching evaluation results, some scholars advocated that we should change the subordinate position of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners, and put forward the mode of teaching spoken Chinese and characters separately, and producing a batch of independent Chinese character textbooks. Compared with the past textbooks, these start from the rule of Chinese characters, which are helpful for students to cognize and learn Chinese characters.Therefore, this paper contrast two typical textbooks to learn Chinese characters as a foreign language, easy way to learn Chinese characters and experiencing Chinese characters, based on the interrelated studies, including idea and style of compiling, characters selection and order, strokes, order of strokes, Chinese characters’structure, component,’six categories of characters’, phonogram, exercise and summarizing advantages and disadvantages about the two teaching material. At last, this paper make some suggestions on total planning, characters selection and order, knowledge of Chinese characters and exercise of textbooks to learn Chinese characters as a foreign language with the latest achievements. Besides, this paper propose the compiling of textbooks to learn Chinese characters as a foreign language should follow the principles of separating knowing from writing, knowing more and writing less. We hope these suggestions can bring some positive effects on compiling of textbooks to learn Chinese characters as a foreign language.
