The poets group of Southwest Associated University is a group of poets comprised of teachers and students from the Southwest Associated University, which was co-founded in Kunming by the three famous universities of Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Nankai University due to the full-scale invasion of Japan to China after July 7,1937. These poets include Feng Zhi, Bian Zhilin, Mu Dan, Zheng Min, Du Yunxie, Ma Fenghua, Luo Jiyi and so on. They embraced life fervently, contemplated life calmly, and abstracted their personal experience into concise lines of verse by their proficiency in modern poetry. Both their poetry writing and poetic theory have had profound influence on the Modern Chinese Literature, especially the modern Chinese poetry, enabling the perfect integration of reality and art in the modern Chinese poetry. Many scholars have studied the modernity of the poets group of Southwest Associated University from various perspectives. However, it is believed in the thesis that, for such a group with distinctive modernity, only by returning to the specific historical "context’", can such root issues of their modernity and their motivation for writing be seized.Within the eight years of lifespan (1937-1946) of the Southwest Associated University, departing from the context theory, the thesis firstly presents the concept and extension of "context" and the context view of the poets group of Southwest Associated University, and then analyzes the macro and micro background as well as the creation of modern poetry from both intra-linguistic context and extra-linguistic context. Specifically, analysis from extra-linguistic context explores the writing state of the peots group in the special era from three perspectives of the warring context the poets faced, the influence from and resonance with the modern western culture, and the anxiety and frustration of the poets group; analysis from intra-linguistic context, focusing on poetry works, explores the writing course of endowing extra-linguistic context with the poets’ personal experience and then forming the motivation for their poetry writing. All in all, this thesis attempts to have a thorough discussion and clarification on issues like the presentation of era and ego, the aesthetic balance between reality and art, and the pursuit of thinking space for the intellects, from the dimension of time and space, and from the internal and external perspectives of poetry writing, so as to seek a deep understanding of the works of the poets group of Southwest Associated University.
