People are often influenced by a lot of emotional factors when they practice second language learning. Among them motivation plays an outstanding role on second language learning.Every learner has his internal and psychological reason when he begins to study the second foreign language and continue studying the second foreign language, this kind of internal and psychological reason is the learning motivation of foreign language.Depending on Robert Gardner and Wallace Lambert there are two basic kinds of motivations, which they called "integrative motivation" and "instrumental motivation". A learner with integrative motivation has a genuine interest in the second language community. He wants to learn their language in order to communicate with them more satisfactorily and to gain closer contact with them. A learner with instrumental motivation is more interested in how the second language can become a useful instrument towards furthering other goals, such as gaining a necessary qualification or improving employment prospects. Some researchers consider that integrative motivation is more important in the classroom setting. But if learners have no chance to communicate with people who speak the target language, instrumental motivation will be more important. The essay mainly discusses some basic theories about motivation, the relationshipof motivation and attitude, the classifications and features of motivation, the relationship of motivation and second language learning and explores how to arouse and cultivate learners' learning motivation.
