A Research On The Protection And Development Of Ancient Villages In The Context Of New Urbanization

Ancient Villages are cultural heritage created by agricultural civilization,which is historical heritage left by traditional society in the course of history as well Ancient Villages imply the essence of Chinese traditional culture. Ancient villages are irreplaceable and nonrenewable. To some extent, ancient village is the cement of Chinese cultural identity from time immemorial. Over the recent years, government started to pay much attention to protect the ancient villages. Influenced by the rapid development of market economy, the protection of ancient villages seems as important as its development.New urbanization provide both opportunity and challenge for the protection and development of ancient village at the same time. It has come into our focus. Village Xidi and Village Hongcun in the southern part of Anhui as a good representative of Chinese ancient village has been declared as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2000.This paper take Village Xidi as the object of study, expecting to explore a successful path and experience of the protection and development of ancient village.The first part of the paper talks about the present situation and problems in the protection and development of ancient village. The second part analyses the model of management and operation compared with other representative ancient villages in southern part of Anhui. The paper also explores all kinds of models of management and operation and describes the influence that new urbanization background has had on village Xidi in the context of new urbanization from four levels, which are production mode, economic mode, living style and thinking mode. Final part of the paper concentrate on exploring the way of new urbanization development and the protection and development of ancient villages and advocating a new way of life based on the research on Village Xidi in southern part of Anhui.
