A Report On The Translation Of Employee Manual

This report is a reflection of the C-E translation practice of Employee Manual. The author finishes the translation under the guidance of Text Typology theory of Reiss. The original text for translation is company’s regulations and rules with both have the characteristics of the informative text and legal text, its words are professional, objective and justice, and the discourse is of strong coherence and logic. In the opinion of Reiss, who is the representative of functionalism, the equivalence of the translation is built on the basis of communicative function of the whole text, rather than the level of words or sentences. The Text Typology of Reiss classified all the texts into three types:Informative text, Expressive text and Operative text and she also indicated that each texts include more than one type. The language function of informative text is to transmit the logical or referential information,and the main focus is the content, the translation method is plain prose. The language function of expressive text is to express sender’s attitude, and the main focus is its aesthetic dimension, and its translation method is identifying and adopting the perspective of ST author. The language function of operative text is to appeal the reader to act in a certain way and its main text focus is appellative, the translation is adaptive. So, the test typology of Reiss and its translation method serves for the guidance for this C-E translation practice.By referring to the general stylistic features of Employee Manual and analyzing the language and discourse of the source text, the author decides, in the process of language transferring, to follow the methods of translating its contents in prose language as the main translation strategy supplemented by the method of adopting perspective of ST author and adaptive. In addition, this report also discusses the specific translation skills adopted in the language transferring practice based upon a carefully conducted comparison of logic difference between English and Chinese texts, including amplification, abbreviation, the change of voice, and rewrite the source text.By doing that, the translation standard is obtained and the translation text is of strong readability.This report is divided into four parts:The first part indicates an introduction of this case; the second part is task preparation, in this part the translator analyze the background and significant of this kind of practice report, and the language characteristics of the source language; The third part determines the translation strategies under the analyzing of the function of source text; The fourth part details analyzing of this case, which includes amplification, abbreviation and the change of the voices,and rewrite the sentences; In the last part, the author makes a conclusion of the whole report and finds out shortcomings.
