Luo Hongkai, as well as Liu Ze, Zeng Jian, Jin Yufu, was one of the Huang Kan’s students at Huang’s early age. Afterwards, he consulted Zhang Binglin and Liu Shipei. In short, Luo Hongkai was deeply affected by Zhang Huang School. Complying with the teachers’ theories of his life, Luo Hongkai has taught philology and phonology in various colleges and universities. Guo Jinxi, Deng Zhiyuan, Ma Jigao, Zeng Zhongshan were learning phonology to him.He has few works in phonology. Phonology, the only handout which systematically presents his views on phonology, is not fully preserved. We can only explore his study of phonology from the visible content of the handout and his books which analysis phonology of Chu Ci.This paper mainly discusses two questions. One is the exploration on Luo Hongkai’s study of phonology of Chu Ci, while the other is the investigation on Phonology. In these two issues, the former is a concrete embodiment of his phonology theory, and the latter is a summary of his phonology theory. In terms of Luo Hongkai’s study of Chu Ci, it contains a large number of studies of phonology. Chu Ci Yin, his main phonological work, can not find now, but its style and content can be roughly inferred according to Chen Huan’s Mao Shi Yin. Chu Ci Zhang Ju Zheng Yin Chu Yu Kao and Chu Ci Lion Yu Shi Li explored respectively Chu dialect vocabularies and collocations. In the two works, Chu Ci Shuang Sheng Die Yun Die Zi Pu, an appendix of the latter is particularly important and gives expression to Luo Hongkai’s thought of archaic Chinese phonology. In addition, Li Sao Lun Wen and Chu Ci Xiao Xue are also involved in the study of phonology. The works mentioned above reflect the phonology study of Luo Hongkai to a certain extent. As Luo Hongkai’s most important phonological work, Phonology successively published by Hunan University and the National Normal College. This handout is divided into two parts. The upper part falls into five chapters to discuss initial categories, four tones, Deng and Hu, rhyme categories and fanqie formula in turn, while the lower part discusses the evolution of phonology. There are rich phonology thoughts of Luo Hongkai in Phonology. They can be summarized as follows:In ancient time, there were 19 initial consonants and 28 vowels. As for the tones, only level tone and entering tone have already come into being. In medieval time, there were 41 initial consonants. In Guangyun, entering tone characters were paired up with the ones of yin tone (characters with-m,-n or -ng as the terminal sound) and yang tone (characters ending in sounds other than-m,-n,-ng and -p,-t,-k).As noted, Luo Hongkai complied with the academic of Zhang Huang School in his early years. Among them, he advocated that Huang Kan’s viewpoint in the field of phonology. In his later years, he devoted himself to the study of philology and phonology and got some achievement. After his more than a decade of research of ancient initials, he found that Yu, Xie, Ding were interlinked. In spite of the limitations of the dialect, he is not able to describe the idea in his article, but the theory is well known to his students. Under his enlightenment, Guo Jinxi published Xie Mu Gu Du Kao.In a nutshell, Luo Hongkai’s study of phonology integrates inheritance and innovation and combines theory with practice. It should be affirmed, because it not only reflects the inheritance of Zhang Huang School, but also gives expression to the enlightenment for younger scholars.
