Domestication And Foreignization In Literary Translation—A Case Study Of Three Chinese Versions Of Sister Carrie

Domestication and foreignization is an inevitable topic in literary translation. In order to allow readers to be able to access to more exotic works, the voice of foreignization is becoming louder and louder in the past twenty or thirty years, which seems to gradually occupy the upper hand. But at the same time, we should realize that there are many factors which affect the choice of translation strategies, such as the cultural context, social factors, ideology, political factors, and even translation motivation. This determines that in the process of translation, we should not simply use a certain translation strategy, but make a concrete analysis of practical problems, which can not be generalized. Only by adopting different translation strategies can we get the best translated works.Based on the three Chinese versions of Sister Carrie, the author analyzes the application of domestication and foreignization in translation from the aspects of language and culture, and studies the effects of domestication and foreignization on translation. In this thesis, the author tries to make a comparative study on the foreignization and domestication strategies through the three Chinese versions of Sister Carrie. Starting with the historical origin of domestication and foreignization, the author combines the current theory of domestication and foreignization and the strategy adopted by the translator in the actual translation, and compares the differences between the three translators in order to find out the best way to deal with domestication and foreignization in literary translation. Finally, in the future, with the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, literary translation is bound to show more "Chinese elements", that is, when we are doing English-Chinese translation, domestication strategy can be appropriately increased in order to increase the readability of the translation, and when we are doing Chinese-English translation, foreignization strategy can be used more in order to facilitate the spread of Chinese culture...
