A Report On Dream Stuff Under The Guidance Of Relevance Theory

This thesis is a report on Dream Stuff under the guidance of relevance theory. The translation of Dream Stuff belongs to translation of stories in the field of literary translation. Dream Stuff is the works of Malaysian Chinese female writer Chuah Guat Eng, which consists of 12 stories, such as a science fiction filled with imagination and some stories which describe Malaysian middle-class life. The contents of the stories in the book are rich and colorful, which fully manifest Malaysian cultural background and rich imagination and exquisite language features of the writer.This report mainly consists of four parts. Firstly, the thesis analyzes the translation task and the source text. Secondly, translation process is thoroughly described, which includes preparation before translation, the comprehension and expression during the translation and the proofreading after translation. Thirdly, the application of direct translation and indirect translation at lexical level and syntactic level is explicitly illustrated. During the process, cognitive environment, communicative clue, contextual effect, processing effort and other concepts of relevance theory are taken into consideration, so that optimal relevance between the understanding of the target reader and the intention of the writer can be achieved. Lastly, the author draws a conclusion based on the translation task.
