Translator’s Subjectivity In Literary Translation:A Report On The Translation Of Someone Like You (Excerpts)

After the cultural turn in 1970s, the translator’s role has drawn more and more attention. Translators are not merely mechanical tools to convert one language to another. They can exert their subjectivity and have more freedom to recreate during translation process. Translators have subjectivity in selecting the source text. Besides, before or during translation, they are influenced by subjectivity, too. At the same time, as readers of the source text, they have their own expectation horizon and understanding of the source text. And they would exert subjectivity and recreate the translation according to the horizon of expectation of the readers to make the target text better accepted by readers.The author of the report selects Someone Like You (excerpt), written by American temporary writer Addsion Moore, as the source text, aiming to introduce the real emotional life and American young people to Chinese readers and promote the cultural exchange. This report mainly analyzes how to exert translator’s subjectivity to reproduce the aesthetic value of the source text in the translation of titles and reproduction of the characters’ images during the process of translation.
