A Report On The Translation Of Dad To Dad:Parenting Like A Pro (Excerpt)

This report is an introduction and analysis on the translation of the first five chapters of Dad to Dad:Parenting like a Pro written by an American writer David L. Hill. It is hoped that those first-time dads and dads-to-be can build confidence for parenting and have a better understanding of the rearing knowledge through Dr. Hill’s introduction of children’s development regularity, behavioral characteristics and psychological needs in every growth stage in detail as well as some diseases and solutions from the perspective of both a father and a pediatrician. Under the guidance of this translation purpose, the report explores some translation techniques as the source text contains lots of medical terms, long sentences and implicit logic connections. This report consists of four chapters. Chapter 1 is the description of the translation task, including an introduction to purposes of the translation task and the source text. Chapter 2 puts an emphasis on elaborating the translation such process as comprehension, expression and proofreading. Chapter 3 conducts an analysis and research on difficulties and problems encountered in the translation; meanwhile, some translation techniques are applied under the guidance of the Skops rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule of the Skops theory, such as amplification, adjustment, conversion and omission. Chapter 4 is the conclusion of the translation practice, during which it could be realized that due to the limitation of the translator’s vision, interpretive ability and culture background, some sentences could not be translated accurately and precisely. The translator should improve the theoretical knowledge and capabilities to solve the problems during the translation.
