As the interpretation has played an essential role in the further development of international communications, there are numerous studies on it. In addition it is the notes that can avoid the significant information loss as a vital part of the interpretation. The consecutive interpreting, one kind of the interpretation, requires the solid bilingual abilities, skilled interpretation techniques including the notes. From the surface, notes are only supporting the memory to recall the information the speaker wants to deliver. However, those false notes as well as those wrong methods to take down notes can greatly influence the quality of interpretation and instead those notes with strong orderliness and logic can assist the interpreters accomplish the work better. Jean Herbert in his Manuel de l’Interprete mentioned that it has been the custom to take notes in the target languages, which can from the start decrease the difficulties of interpretation. Those various difficulties may compare source languages and target languages as various codes, and the interpretation is a information conversion process turning the source language code into the target language code. From the perspective of cognitive psychology, this kind of information conversion refers to the process that the information input is transformed, decreased, explained, saved, recovered and finally used (Neisser). Also taking notes in target languages is a cognitive processing that requires special attention and conscious effort, which is a sort of control processing.Taking Field Interpreting by Lin Chaolun for examples, including 36 interpretation notes both from English to Chinese and Chinese to English, as well as the notes and the interpretation output by 4 students from CCNU MTI(2014) and 1 graduate from WUT MTI(2012) that are based on Unit 1 and Unit 2 in Field Interpreting, this paper will compare the respective proportion of source languages and target languages in notes, both of Lin Chaolun and that of the students interpreters. Also the quality of students interpreters’ output interpretation according to their notes will also be discussed. Then from the information processing, organization of knowledge and thoughts as well as logics these three perspectives, the relation between those mistakes(both information that is missed without translation, that is mistranslated, or that is translated with added information) and interpretation notes will be figured out. At last conclusions will be made how to fully make use of the knowledge of cognitive psychology to take notes during the interpretation.
