The cultures of Chinese tea and ceramic both have a long history, and people have tried to combine the two since ancient times. Ceramic is not only a tool used to taste tea, but also the container to preserve tea. When creating our time-honored civilization, our ancestors also attach much importance to chasing and enjoying beauty. For thousands of years, owners of Changsha kilns have formed the unique local cultural characters as they use patterns that can present people’s life interest and the local culture to decorate their ceramics with the modeled and applique decoration. The black tea belongs to China’s six major tea types and can be divided into three strains- Anhua black tea from Hunan, Pu’er tea from Yunan and Liu Pao tea from Guangxi. In this thesis, Anhua black tea will be studied. It has a long history and contains profound culture regarded contents, and has been as the’national tea’ traded to the north-western China and many foreign countries. As the advance of society, the black tea industry keeps developing, however its packaging design is still at the initial stage as the designs vary and can’t thoroughly express cultures. As part of the Hunan culture, Changsha molded and applique decoration is mainly applied on ornamental porcelain and porcelain used for collection, which can’t meet the demand of the market. And how to combine this technique with the design harmoniously is what will be discussed in this thesis, in which the feasibility, practicability will be studied, aiming to inherit and develop the technique and provide new thoughts for the packaging design of Anhua black tea.. This thesis consists of three parts-the first part deals with the mould, craftsmanship and technical process of Changsha molded and applique decoration and analyzes its characteristics. Also, it studies Anhua black tea’s history and culture, as well as the characters and the weaknesses of the current packaging design, aiming to put forward the importance of regional culture in the design. Then, the thesis analyzes the feasibility and the application mode of Changsha molded and applique decoration being used on the tea packaging. At last, this thesis tries to apply the inheritance of Changsha kiln’s decoration patterns and the application of creative design in black tea’s packaging. In this topic, based on its fundamental research, effective visual elements have been extracted and applied on Anhua black tea’s packaging design after the refinement and innovation of Changsha molded and applique decoration’s traditional elements. And three works are used to demonstrated the research, trying to broaden the design thoughts of Changsha kiln, adapt to the new direction of the future Changsha kiln’s ceramics art and provide new thoughts for Anhua black tea’s packaging design.
