The problems that face in children English teaching catch attention from more and more researchers than before. Children have advantages to learn English because of their salient abilities of imitation and interest. At the same time, it is still a subject to maintain and improve children’s learning interests. Through the introduction of competitive mechanisms, children can enjoy the joyful environment and make fast progress in the aspect of competition, unity and creativity. Moreover, competitive mechanisms could highlight the initiative of students. The author tries to make a comprehensive comparative study on the effects of different competitive mechanisms on children’s English learning through experiment for exploring suitable competitive types in situational English teaching. The main content of this study is to explore the effectiveness of different competitive mechanisms in situational teaching. The effects of competitive mechanisms are discussed from the contents of competition and forms of competition. There are three theoretical foundations in the thesis: constructivism, Krashen’s affective filter hypothesis, and Thorndike’s theory of learning which includes law of effect, law of exercise and law of recency. The author chooses 31 students in the Grade Four of primary school as the research subjects, and divides them into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group consists of 16 students, and the control group is comprised of 15 students. The experiment lasts for a semester. Both quantitative method and qualitative method are applied. The research results are revealed through analyzing the data collected from the experiment, questionnaires and observation. From the results of the experiment, it can be seemed that the competitive mechanisms have effects on children’s learning interest in situational language teaching on children English training; different competitive mechanisms make a difference in children English training; the forms of dialogue and acting are effective and the forms of listening and answering and explaining are less effective.Although some limitations exist in this study, such as the forms of competitive mechanisms are not fully listed, the research makes some contributions to the situational teaching in children English training.
