The Research On Matteo Ricci’s View Of Life And Death

Late Ming and Early Qing Dynasty,The Jesuit Matteo Ricci opened the exchange and dialogue between Chinese and Western culture by combining Catholicism and Chinese Confucian culture,its conception of Life and Death attracted wide attention from the Late Ming Dynasty.this article looks at Matteo Ricci’s conception of Death, expound the details of its concept of Life and Death from catholic theological doctrine and individual life ethics after introducing it’s theology and philosophy background,and analysis the expression of its concept of Life and Death in Confucian culture horizon based on interpretation of the text.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part introduces the theology and philosophy background and Late Ming intellectual profiles of the concept of Life and Death.Thomas’ theory of soul and view of happiness of ”suicide death worship” are the philosophical basis of the Matteo Ricci’s conception of Life and Death;the spiritual exercises of the Jesuit founder Loyola as slim codex of Jesuits also is the one source of Matteo Ricci’s conception of Life and Death.In the turbulent period of the Late Ming Dynasty,attention to the issue of life and death and relatively free academic atmosphere provided an opportunity for Matteo Ricci to evangelize the conception of Life and Death of Catholic.The second part describes the core concept of Matteo Ricci’s conception of Life and Death from the catholic theological doctrines:Theory of Human Nature, Theory of Soul,Eschatology.Understand human nature around the relationship between man and nature has established the ultimate goal of unity of man and God,have faith in God bless the good and punish the evil preset the immortality of the soul, the immortality of the soul guide the existence of heaven and hell.good and evil of human nature,the immortality of the soul and the punishment of heaven and hell together constitute the discussion on life and death in the theological doctrine.The third part discusses Matteo Ricci’s attitude to Life and Death from the life of the individual settle level.all earthly suffering,the fragility and the limitation of life make Matteo Ricci seem later generations as ture home for people.this world is only temporary sojourn for people,death is through the sea and session shore to go home.Thus forming a “often think about death” attitude,and put forward the “harmony with god, harmony with people,harmony with oneself” solution to the road of life and death.The last part discusses the expression way of Matteo Ricci’s death concept in the perspective of Confucian culture. namely express the doctrine of the immortality of the soul and the heaven and hell with the Confucian concepts and words that are similar to the Catholic doctrine;constructs the rationality of the conception of life and death under the context of Confucian ethics and the horizon of realistic solicitude.The conception of Catholic Life and Death that integrate Confucian concept and mode of thinking is similar to that of Confucianism in the perfection of human, which made the Chinese expression of the concept of Life and Death can be expanded and produced in the context of Confucianism.
