| This practice report probes into the usage of articles based on the structure and function of Office Actions(OA). Firstly, by statistically analyzing 50 OA C-E translation cases completed by OA translation beginners, the author obtains the distribution of the prominent problems caused by the misusage of articles, i.e., Confusing Relations of Terms, Ambiguous Locations of Citations, and Narrowed Application Scopes in the three parts of an OA text. Then, through a theoretical study on the usage of articles, the author finds out that the existing theoretical results cannot fully and strongly guide the usage of articles in OA C-E translation. Hence, 50 pieces of OA C-E translation cases with full marks from the client are collected and analyzed for conducting an empirical study. The results show that the contents of an OA text, influenced by different factors, can be divided into several Units, and in the translation, except for special occasions, the usage of articles should abide by the General Rule within each Unit. On this basis, this report proposes three solutions: Straightening out Document Relations, Satisfying Client Requirements, and Implementing Examiners’ Intentions. It is, therefore, advisable to guide translation beginners to apply the three solutions into OA C-E translation practice, and at the same time learn how to correctly divide Units and take notice of the exceptions so as to enhance their translation performance effectively. |
