The Classic of Mountains and Seas has long been denominated as the encyclopedia of ancient times, and its content involves history, geography, ethnicity, mythology, religion, animal, herbs, minerals and medicine and so on. How to translate the classics in proper ways is a tremendous issue for scholars all over the world, and particularly, how to properly translate the nouns in the classics is an essential issue. Image-Schema Theory is one of the most significant theories of cognitive linguistics. It plays an important role in many aspects such as identifying objects, forming experience, understanding the world and learning language, and so on. The theory of image-schema has been applied to many research areas such as brain activity analysis and text or discourse analysis, in which a dozen of valuable achievements have been achieved, including in the sphere of classic documents translation. This thesis attempts to apply the Image-Schema Theory into the translation of mythological images in the Classic of Mountains and Seas, so as to deepen the manipulation of Image-Schema Theory and provide a new perspective to research the translation of the Classic of Mountains and Seas. This thesis classifies the mythological images in the book into diverse categories and discusses how those images are translated in two English versions(Anne Birrell & Wang Hong, Zhao Zheng) selected as the reference, based on which, probes into the feasible methods to translate those images by applying the Image-Schemata theory.
