This paper is the report on the English-Chinese translation of Asian American History and Culture: An Encyclopedia I which belongs to the type of informative text as well as vocative text. This book covers a comprehensive historical knowledge of Asian Americans in various fields including politics, economy, culture, education and so on. And its Chinese translation is quite valuable to those history lovers and researchers of Asian Americans.Given features of the translation material as historical text, during the translation process, the translator should not only ensure the equal precision and rigorousness of the target text as the source text, but also the smoothness and understandability of the translation by making certain adjustments due to the cultural differences between source and target languages. Therefore, this report employed Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation as the guidance. And with concrete cases translation strategies and techniques were discussed from the aspects of words, sentences, text and pragmatics.This report is divided into four parts including task description, translation process description, case analysis and conclusion. Besides, part of the translation material, both source text and target text are presented in the appendix.
